Hurricane Katrina-The Most Destructive Storm in U.S. History

Image
Hurricane Katrina  Hurricane Katrina made landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana on August 29, 2005. To this day it is still considered the most destructive storm in United States history, killing more than 1,800 and causing an estimated $120 billion in damages.  It crossed through the Gulf of Mexico and gained speed with winds up to 175 miles per hour. The category 5 storm devastated many cities in it's path but none as bad as New Orleans. Katrina had a great impact on many lives and changed the face of communities across the country, including Corpus Christi. While rescuers flocked north to the coastal city to provide assistance, buses headed south with refugees. I chose several different covers. Some I just thought were cool but most are artists that remind me of my mom. I especially like the Linda Ronstadt covers from when she was younger. It reminds me of old pictures I've seen of my mother growing up.  (My blog is called Stella's Daughter...)

And advertisers served it up the messages ever so sweetly.            The woman in the commercial only makes an appearance twice. Once its to swirl a pastel pink finger through the frosting of one of her tempting treats and the other is when she has her eyes suggestively superimposed over the words WILD BLUEBERRY MUFFIN.  Figure 1 The ad features very suggestive music and text, narrated by a man, that imply that baking for her significant other makes her sexy and desirable. She knows his weakness. We don't see her face. Figure 2 Everything is sugary sweet, right down to her perfect pink n

Singer Wows the Crowd

Kodie Lee wowed America on the popular television show America's Got Talent last week, earning the Golden Buzzer from new judge Gabriella Union. Kodie, who faces some very unique challenges uses his music as a way to connect with the outside world. This was an amazing performance by a pretty amazing kid. Despite being blind and autistic, Kodie has perfect pitch and a photographic memory for sound enabling him to memorize a song after hearing it just one time.
